In the winter of 2006, AnimAction journeyed north of the artic circle to collaborate with the (Arctic Health Research NetworkAHRN) and the Healthy Aboriginal Network. Much of AHRN's goals fit perfectly with AnimAction as we like to hand over the reigns to the community.
The Arctic Health Research Network spans three territories in Northern Canada, the Yukon, the NWT, and Nunavut. The goal of AHRN is be a community driven, northern lead, health and wellness research network that facilitates the identification of health research priorities in the north. Its membership includes the Yukon First Nations, Dene Cultural Institute, National Aboriginal Health Organization (NWT board rep), Aklavik Health Committee, Yukon Public Health Association, Northern Cochrane Network Site, Nunavut Department of Health and Social Services, Health and Social Research Review Committee (represented by Nunavut HSS, Nunavut Statistics, Nunavut Research Institute and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated) and independent aboriginal consultants.
The Healthy Aboriginal Network is a non-profit promotion of Aboriginal Health, Literacy and Wellness for Aboriginal Canadian Youth which uses cutting edge media in the form of comic books and animatics to educate and inspire. AnimAction introduced the use of animation to add to their portfolio of mediums.
Under the direction of AHRN's Sue Heron Herbert and Billy Archie of the Aklavik Health Committee and working in concert with Director Sean Muir and Writer/Artist Steve Sanderson of The Healthy Aboriginal Network, the AnimAction program was introduced at Moose Kerr School in Aklavik in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Once successfully integrated into the curriculum, the AnimAction program will be able to give youth voice on issues such as Suicide Prevention, Diabetes, the Importance of Higher Education and Drug and Substance Abuse education.
